Dentist Chad Boger Recognized As “Best Dentist” In Plymouth

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Best of the City | Dentist Plymouth MN

Tiger Oaks Publishing hosted a “Best of Plymouth &  Maple Grove” this past Tuesday night to reveal the results of surveys conducted respectively by Plymouth Magazine and Maple Grove Magazine. It was a beautiful night out at Rush Creek Golf Club with a silent auction to benefit two worthy organizations that serve our communities, Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners and CROSS Food Shelf.

It was also a special night for Boger Dental because our own Dr. Chad Boger was recognized as Best Dentist by the readers of Plymouth Magazine. Here is what the magazine had to say…

BEST DENTIST | Dr. Chad Boger, Boger Dental

“Nothing is quite the same as a family-owned and operated business, and that’s definately true in the case of our top doc in the dental field, Chad Boger, D.D.S. His dad Steve founded the business 35 years ago, and the company’s approach is one of open communication, respect and friendliness inside and outside the office (cases in point: morning huddles, continuing education ops and group get aways). Chad joined the team in 2002 after graduating from the University of Minnesota’s prestigious dental program.”

Congratulations, Dr. Chad!

Twenty-Five Years of Friendly Patient Care

Friday, June 1st, 2012

Boger Dental team provides top notch patient careTwo sure signs of a healthy dental team are the longevity of the group and the tenure of its members. At Boger Dental in Plymouth, we have been fortunate to bring together and retain some fantastic dental professionals over the years. Several of our team members have been with us for over ten, 15 and 20 years. Melissa Polansky has been a faithful member of the Boger Dental for 25 years now. We are grateful for her loyal dedication to our dental practice and the high standard she sets patient service by our administrative team.

Melissa joined Dr. Steve Boger and the Boger Dental team back in 1987. “I actually came to know Boger Dental and their unique patient-centered philosophy as a patient! I was so impressed that I joined the team myself!” Melissa started her dental career as chair side assistant; however, her primarily role at Boger Dental is leading our talented team of patient services coordinators. Melissa will assure that you are greeted with a sincere, warm smile and that you are helped with a smile with all of your scheduling and administrative needs.

We had the opportunity to recognize Melissa and thank her at our recent team meeting. Dr. Steve Boger reminisced about their early days together and thanked her for contribution with the gift of a travel voucher. Melissa shared kind words about her team and thanked Dr. Steve for his leadership and the learning opportunities she has been afforded over the years.

Next time you are at Boger Dental, please join us in thanking Melissa for her warm smile and friendly service!

What’s The Buzz Over Dental X-Rays About?

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Digital dental xrayYou have probably heard about the controversy stirring around the study published by the American Cancer Society on April 10th that claims to have made a connection between dental x-rays and brain tumors. It is being covered by all of the news stations, from CBS News to the Huffington Post. Those kinds of claims not only make headlines but caught the attention of our team here at Boger Dental and our professional peers, as well. So, after careful review, we offer our patients this insight to help find perspective about the study’s findings and implications.

The study, titled “Dental X-Rays and Risk of Meningioma,” was led by researcher and neurosurgeon Elizabeth B. Claus, M.D., of Yale University School of Medicine and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. It concludes that “exposure to some dental X-rays performed in the past, when radiation exposure was greater than in the current era, appears to be associated with an increased risk of intracranial meningioma.”

Dental researchers, such as Dr. Alan G. Lurie, a radiation biologist and head of radiology at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, are questioning the findings because the study is basing its scientific results on the subjective ability of the study participants to be able to accurately remember how many and what kind of dental x-rays they had as long as 40 years prior. Dr. Lurie has many concerns about the study’s design and outcomes. “I think it’s a very flawed study,” he said. The American Dental Association continues to stand by its recommendation of dental x-rays for accurate diagnosis and treatment. The ADA released a statement in response to the study saying, “The ADA has reviewed the study and notes that the results rely on the individuals’ memories of having dental X-rays taken years earlier.”

So, Are Dental X-Rays Really Safe?

There’s no question that dental x-rays are invaluable tools for evaluating your oral health by allowing us to look at what is happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums. Plain and simple, in many cases without dental-x-rays we cannot provide you with the diagnosis accuracy or high level of individualized dental care that you deserve. Dental x-rays reveal important information including:

  • the start of decay between teeth or below existing fillings
  • infections in the bone
  • periodontal (gum) disease
  • abscesses or cysts
  • developmental abnormalities
  • and certain types of tumors

With your safety in mind, Boger Dental began using digital x-ray technology many years ago. The level of radiation you receive from a digital x-ray is minimal and we only take them when it is deemed medically necessary for diagnosis and to keep your dental records up to date.

To give you some perspective for how the radiation you receive from digital dental x-rays compares with other sources you may experience during your day, please refer to the chart we have included. [chart coming soon]

Enabling our patients to make make educated and informed decisions when it comes to their dental care has always been a core value at Boger Dental. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to ask a member of our team by email at patientcare@bogerdental.com, by calling Boger Dental at (763) 546-7707, or at your next dental visit. School Visits Bring Dental Health Month to Plymouth Classrooms

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Plymouth-dental-team-visits-schoolsIn conjunction with National Children’s Dental Health Month, hygienists and dental assistants from Boger Dental in Plymouth will be visiting a number of classrooms throughout the local community to help emphasize the importance of good dental health habits.

Lead by their lead hygienist with a background in education, Erin Mastro, they have developed 30-40 minute programs including PowerPoint presentations that are age-appropriate for preschoolers through third grade. The kids will learn about:

  • The effects of sugar on your teeth with a hands-on experiment
  • Making good food and drink choices
  • Home care techniques
  • And each child will receive dental goodies to take home

For the younger children, the visit also includes a cameo appearance from the Boger Dental Tooth Fairy!

Reserve Your Spot For Dental Health Month 2013

Due to an overwhelming (but welcome!) response, the time slots have been filled for this year. If you are interested for the future, email robyn@bogerdental.com and we can either arrange another time or inform you of the opportunity again next January.

Cavity Fighting Chewing Gum For Our Plymouth Patients?

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Minneapolis Oral DentistryOur dental patients often ask us if chewing xylitol gum is an effective substitute for tooth brushing and regular dental exams.

Before I answer that question, let me tell you a little bit about xylitol:

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that was first discovered in birch tree bark but is also found in many fruits and vegetables. Unlike most other sweeteners (natural or synthetic), xylitol is actually good for your teeth. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that xylitol prevents the growth of the bacteria that initiates decay. It also reduces plaque and strengthens tooth enamel.

Xylitol has other benefits, as well. Because it is low on the glycemic index, many of my diabetic patients enjoy it as a healthy alternative to sugar. If my patients complain about frequent dry mouth, I recommend Xylitol gum or mints to stimulate saliva production without promoting tooth decay.

Now, back to the golden question. Is xylitol gum just as effective as brushing your teeth and seeing your Plymouth family dentist regularly? Absolutely not! If you cannot brush your teeth after a meal, chewing xylitol gum for five or ten minutes is probably a good idea. However, you should still brush your teeth thoroughly (with a soft brush) after meals and get twice-yearly exams and oral dentistry deep cleanings at your Plymouth dentistry clinic.

At Boger Dental, our goal is to keep your smile healthy and beautiful for life by preventing dental problems before they start. If you postpone dental visits until you feel pain, you risk losing teeth and most certainly will require more extensive treatment than if the problem was caught earlier. Is it time for a dental exam with your Plymouth family dentist? Call us at 763-546-7707 to book an appointment. Our friendly and advanced is waiting to take care of all your dental needs.

Boger Dental Avoids Dental Products Containing BPA

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

By using an alternative compound, we can protect our patients while maximizing quality.

In recent days, some of our patients may have seen media reports outlining new research examining the safety of some dental products, sealants and fillings.

In the new research, some chemical compounds used in select dental products are shown to break down in a way that can potentially expose patients to bisphenoal A (BPA).  While researchers do not conclude such products are necessarily unsafe, Boger Dental understands the confusion these media reports can cause for our patients, and wants to take the opportunity to help clarify the standing of our practice.

Because the health and safety of our patients is our number one priority, Boger Dental does not use dental materials that contain BPA or can break down and expose our patients to BPA.

Instead, our practice uses products which contain a compound known as Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether methacrytlate, or BisGMA.  While the two sound similar – they are not the same. Studies have shown that BisGMA is safe and stable for use in the mouth.

If you have any other questions or concerns, we welcome you to ask questions during your next visit to Boger Dental.

Boger Dental Tooth Fairy Visits Area Classrooms

Celebrating Children's Dental Health Month

Celebrating Children's Dental Health Month

In celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month, the Boger Dental Tooth Fairy and team members made visits to preschools and elementary schools throughout the community spreading the news about the importance of good dental care.

They talked with the kids about the importance of healthy eating, keeping their teeth clean and how to avoid getting cavities. In the elementary school classrooms, they had fun with a couple of activities to get them thinking about the important of their teeth for their mouths and bodies. One experiment demonstrated the amount of sugar in a can of soda and a bottle of a power drink. Our Tooth Fairy demonstrated how to use disclosing tablets to identify left over plaque that has not been brushed away and the importance of using a fluoride rinse after brushing at night. Finally, we gave out goodie bags with a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste and Xylitol toothbrushes and sugar-free gum.

A Brush Up On Brushing Techniques

A Brush Up On Brushing Techniques

We shared a few helpful tips with parents, too!
• Have your child brush morning and night with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
• Have them floss their teeth every day. Floss aids work great for this age and I showed the children a couple of different examples.
• Use a daily fluoride swish, such as “Inspector Hector” or “ACT.” Listerine also has a great product to show kids their plaque before and after brushing their teeth.
• Consider allowing your child to chew sugar-free gum after meals. Make sure an active ingredient is Xylitol (like the samples we have included), which inhibit Strep Mutans that cause decay.
• Encourage your child to drink plenty of water that has added fluoride. If they drink only bottled water, find a source of water that has added fluoride.
• Limit their intake of sodas, power (sports) drinks and juices, as well as sweets and sticky snacks, such as fruit snacks.
