Questions To Ask Your Plymouth Dentist

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Questions To Ask Your Plymouth Dentist Sometimes we research our Plymouth mechanic or St. Paul hairdresser more thoroughly than our Plymouth dental professional. Shouldn’t your dental care be far more important than the condition of your car or the style of your hair? At Boger Dental, we love to answer questions about your teeth. You should be asking your Minnesota dentist any question you have about the care and status of your teeth.

For instance, you may have questions about the school of dentistry and dental specialties studied. Though important, dentistry school is not the only place to gain dental experience, however. Dr. Stephen & Chad Boger have been performing complex Minnesota dental procedures since 1978.

You should also be asking about the dentistry specialties your Minnesota dentist offers such as tooth restoration, braces and lumineers. These services may not be important to you now, but it is a good idea to have an understanding of your options, and to know what your Minnesota dentist has to offer.

If you are contemplating smile restoration, tooth implants, or tooth whitening, evaluate Plymouth cosmetic dentistry options with your dentist. Look at before and after pictures, and ask your Plymouth dentist what procedures may be right for you.

General dentists offer a variety of dental services such as tooth extractions and tooth fillings, and can treat every member of the family. At Boger Dental, we specialize in cosmetic dentistry, family dentistry, and dental implants.

You have many choices for your Plymouth family dentistry. We welcome questions about all aspects of our Boger Dental practice. Visit us at 2720 Annapolis Circle N., Plymouth MN and talk to a member of our friendly and advanced team.

Boger Dental in Plymouth Cares For Teeth

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Boger Dental in Plymouth Cares For Teeth Dentists in Plymouth are concerned with your oral health and thus care about the condition of your mouth and all of your many teeth. At Boger Dental we recognize that your teeth help you both eat and speak. You use your teeth to tear, scrape, and chew food, as well as to form words with your tongue. Teeth are an important part of your oral health and Boger Dental located in Plymouth, Minnesota wants to help keep your mouth and teeth healthy.

We humans have two sets of teeth in our lifetime. The first set are your ‘primary teeth’, which many folks around Plymouth often call ‘baby teeth’. Baby teeth typically start to come in at about 6 months old. An average healthy mouth for a Plymouth resident has a total of 20 primary teeth by about age 5.

Your primary teeth will eventually fall out and new teeth known as ‘permanent teeth’ will grow in. Permanent teeth typically begin to come in around age 6 for most Plymouth residents, but every person is unique and it could be a little earlier or later. By about age 13 an average healthy mouth should have 28 of the total 32 permanent teeth. The last four permanent teeth may or may not come, but typically come in between the ages of 17 and 21 if they do. Because of the late age that these last teeth come in they are commonly called ‘wisdom teeth‘.

Many adults in the city of Plymouth have their wisdom teeth pulled out because these teeth can be problematic to your oral health, such as crowding a mouth. Other adults in the Plymouth area may not have these teeth pulled out because they are not causing problems. If you are concerned about the state of your wisdom teeth you can visit our local Plymouth dental office and we can help you make a decision.

Caring for all of your teeth whether you are young and have 20 primary teeth or are an adult and have 28 to 32 permanent teeth is important for your overall health. Visiting your Plymouth dentist regularly, and brushing and flossing daily are great ways to care for your many teeth. Boger Dental located in Plymouth, cares about your  oral health and teeth and can be reached by phone at 763-546-7707.

The Dangers of Oral Piercing

Monday, May 17th, 2010

The Dangers of Oral Piercing If you live in the Plymouth area and are considering puncturing your lip or tongue, read this:

Infection
Your mouth is full of bacteria. Any opening in the tissue carries the risk of infection. The germs from your tongue and mouth can easily get into your bloodstream. Plymouth dentists and doctors are continually treating serious infections caused by oral piercings. Oral infections can be a real problem, and should be a major consideration before getting an oral piercing.

Tooth Damage
It should come as no surprise that having a piece of metal bang around in your mouth can easily chip tooth enamel. Though tooth enamel is amazingly strong, once it’s chipped or cracked, it can only be restored with artificial material. Fortunately, Boger Dental in Plymouth offers many tooth restoration options such as crowns and fillings, but our advice is to avoid the problem if you can.

Prolonged Bleeding and Swelling
The blood vessels in the tongue are often damaged when the tongue is pierced, causing prolonged bleeding and possible build-up of scar tissue. In some cases, the tongue swells up enough to block the airway.

Gum Recession
A number of periodontal disease studies have shown that wearing oral jewelry is linked to periodontal disease which can result in tooth loss. Periodontal disease, or ‘gum disease’, can cause gum recession and exposes the root of your teeth, potentially causing hyper sensitivity and pain. Again, our advice is to avoid the problem right from the start.

These are just a few of the dangers. Dr. Stephen & Chad Boger at Boger Dental can give you more information about the risks of oral piercings. If you already have damage, call 763-546-7707 to schedule a consultation.

Preventing Gum Disease at Boger Dental

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Preventing Gum Disease at Boger Dental Run your tongue along the gumline behind your lower front teeth. Do you feel a ridge? This is probably tartar or dental calculus.

Even if you brush and floss regularly, plaque and tartar can gradually accumulate. If not removed, these bacteria-breeding substances cause the gums to become irritated and swollen. Eventually, the gums become detached from the tooth, creating a ‘pocket’. This creates a new space for plaque and tartar to grow. In advanced stages of periodontal disease, the toxins created by the bacteria literally rot the gum, teeth and bone.

At Boger Dental in Plymouth, we perform the most thorough dental cleanings possible. Gum disease can be reversed in its early stages.

Our goal is to help our Minneapolis dental patients prevent gum disease before any damage occurs. Cleanings include root planing and periodontal scaling. Scaling removes the plaque and calculus above and, especially, below the gumline where your toothbrush cannot reach. Planing smoothes root surfaces so it is more difficult for plaque and tartar to accumulate and grow. It also creates a healthy surface for the gums to reattach to the root if necessary.

To schedule a deep cleaning, call 763-546-7707. We are located at 2720 Annapolis Circle N., in Plymouth MN. In addition to providing comprehensive dental cleanings, we create mega-watt smiles for cosmetic dentistry clients. See http://www.BogerDental.com for more information about our state-of-the-art dental practice.

Bad Breath Is No Fun For Plymouth Residents

Bad Breath Is No Fun For Plymouth Residents

Imagine you are starting a new job in Plymouth and meeting your new boss for the first time. Confidence is key to your success. As you reach out to shake the extended hand your broad confident smile exposes rows of pearly white teeth, yet when you open your mouth to exchange greetings you worry about bad breath. Perhaps your breath is not as a pleasant as you had hoped. Bad breath is a worry and possible embarrassment for many residents of Plymouth, Minnesota, from ages 20 to 80. Regular dental checkups at Boger Dental can help alleviate your concern over bad breath. We have been addressing bad breath since 1978.

The technical term for bad breath is halitosis. Many factors can cause or contribute to halitosis. One of these factors is the food you eat. Onions and garlic are both known for having a potent affect on your breath. Simply observing the foods you eat here in Plymouth can result in a change in your breath.

In most cases, bad breath originates in your mouth. Transient bad breath can be resolved through eating or brushing, and is a temporary condition usually associated with a dry mouth. Persistent bad breath can be a serious problem effecting as much as 25 percent of our Plymouth residents. Persistent bad breath can be caused by dry mouth, and is made worse when food is not cleared away properly.

Brushing and flossing daily is a critical step in curing bad breath. Food particles can build up in your mouth and foster bacteria which can cause bad breath. This not only includes the food particles that may get stuck between your teeth, but also the food that collects around your gums or on your tongue. Brushing and flossing daily can help reduce the amount of food particles that stay in your mouth and cause bad breath. Regular visits to Boger Dental in Plymouth can also reduce or eliminate the progression of bad breath.

Other factors that can contribute to bad breath for Plymouth residents include dry mouth, tobacco use, and health concerns such as infections. Come visit Boger Dental located in Plymouth, Minnesota; we’ll provide you with information about bad breath in a professional environment. Give us a call at 763-546-7707 to set up an appointment.

Choosing A Dentist In Plymouth

Choosing A Dentist In Plymouth

The American Dental Association offers some welcome advice for choosing a dentist in Plymouth. We have already talked about how word of mouth is an important factor in how many people find a dentist. Here are some things you should look for in an Plymouth dentist:
Location is always a factor when choosing a dentist in Plymouth. If you live in the Plymouth Minnesota area, there are many options, and most Plymouth locations are not too far out of the way. While location plays an important role in convenience, many people are willing to drive a little farther for a better experience with their Plymouth dentist.
Relationship is a strong factor. Your Plymouth dentist should be approachable, and should make you feel comfortable when you are in the dentist chair. After all, your Plymouth dentist will be working very close with you to help you achieve a high level of oral hygiene; you most certainly will want to have a good, professional, comfortable relationship with your Plymouth dentist and the dental office staff.
Specialty is another important factor in choosing a dentist in Plymouth. Some dentists specialize in cosmetic dentistry. Others specialize in corrective dentistry such as braces. Depending on your need, you may select a local Plymouth dentist who can solve your immediate concern. Bare in mind, however, that it is good to have a general dentist who can maintain your dental history and work with you to through the years.
If you are looking for a dentist in the Twin Cities area, please come by and speak with us. We can address your interest in any of these critical areas, and will be happy to introduce you to Boger Dental.

We look forward to meeting you.

Boger Dental Tooth Fairy Visits Area Classrooms

Celebrating Children's Dental Health Month

Celebrating Children's Dental Health Month

In celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month, the Boger Dental Tooth Fairy and team members made visits to preschools and elementary schools throughout the community spreading the news about the importance of good dental care.

They talked with the kids about the importance of healthy eating, keeping their teeth clean and how to avoid getting cavities. In the elementary school classrooms, they had fun with a couple of activities to get them thinking about the important of their teeth for their mouths and bodies. One experiment demonstrated the amount of sugar in a can of soda and a bottle of a power drink. Our Tooth Fairy demonstrated how to use disclosing tablets to identify left over plaque that has not been brushed away and the importance of using a fluoride rinse after brushing at night. Finally, we gave out goodie bags with a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste and Xylitol toothbrushes and sugar-free gum.

A Brush Up On Brushing Techniques

A Brush Up On Brushing Techniques

We shared a few helpful tips with parents, too!
• Have your child brush morning and night with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
• Have them floss their teeth every day. Floss aids work great for this age and I showed the children a couple of different examples.
• Use a daily fluoride swish, such as “Inspector Hector” or “ACT.” Listerine also has a great product to show kids their plaque before and after brushing their teeth.
• Consider allowing your child to chew sugar-free gum after meals. Make sure an active ingredient is Xylitol (like the samples we have included), which inhibit Strep Mutans that cause decay.
• Encourage your child to drink plenty of water that has added fluoride. If they drink only bottled water, find a source of water that has added fluoride.
• Limit their intake of sodas, power (sports) drinks and juices, as well as sweets and sticky snacks, such as fruit snacks.
