Teeth can become stained or discolored from a wide range of reasons. Food, drinks, medications, tobacco usage, and more can all stain the enamel of your teeth, giving them a yellowish tint. Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry option to help alleviate any stress caused by discolored teeth.

Are you in the market for getting your teeth whitened? With plenty of options to choose from, Boger Dental offers a fantastic choice for those who want to have an in-office whitening experience, as well as maintaining their whitening at home. Get to know more about our Ultradent Opalescence Boost and Opalescence Take Home Bleaching Systems.

How Does Opalescence Work?

Opalescence is a minimally invasive treatment option for whitening stained and discolored teeth. This product utilizes 38% hydrogen peroxide in a bleaching gel that uses chemistry to help with the effects. The gel also contains a mixture of potassium nitrate and fluoride. Potassium nitrate helps with sensitivity, and fluoride helps strengthen enamel, so you’re battling more than just discolored teeth with this option. And, because the gel is so powerful, you won’t need to have a light used in conjunction with it.

The in-office portion of Opalescence works similar to Zoom! Advanced Power™, in that you’ll have a consultation to find out if this product is the right option for your teeth. From there, you’ll want to schedule a thorough tooth cleaning. Then, once your teeth are good to go, the in-office portion can begin.

Your dentist or dental assistant will apply the gel to the front of your teeth where it will sit for 10-15 minutes. These sessions can be repeated up to five times for maximum results.

Remember that your treated teeth will continue to whiten for 12-24 hours after your in-office treatment. Your dentist might provide you with the take-home system as well to sustain and maintain your bright smile.

Maintaining Your Opalescence Smile

We’ve mentioned the take-home system, but what does it entail? The Opalescence Take Home Bleaching System helps stabilize your teeth and gets them to their final desired color. You’ll receive custom-fitted trays that are made just for you, along with syringes of the Opalescence gel.

When you get home, you’ll want to continue using your trays for the amount of time your dentist recommends until the desired color is reached. Once you’ve achieved the shade you’re hoping for, use your plate and gel for a few days (at a time) every month. Usually, you only need to have your trays on for one to two hours, but with a few different gel options, you can work with your dentist to find the one that fits with your lifestyle!

Pro-tip: Ask your dentist about the best way to store your Opalescence gel at home.

Considerations

If you want to give Opalescence a try, check with your dentist first to see if it’s a good option for your teeth. One thing to consider with this gel is that because of the high dosage of hydrogen peroxide, you’re more likely to suffer from sensitivity while using this product. If you do have sensitive teeth, your dentist can give you a potassium nitrate gel to also use, or try a sensitivity-reducing toothpaste to help ease any discomfort.

While technicolor teeth sound like a cool thing to have, in reality, they aren’t! In the dentistry world, these kinds of teeth mean that you have different tooth shades for most of your teeth, causing most people to feel self-conscious. This discoloring can happen when you have a crown, veneer, or even composite bonding done and then whiten your teeth afterward. We suggest working with your dentist on all service options you want for your teeth.

Cost

Similarly priced to Zoom! Advanced Power™, Opalescence is around $500, although if you continue to get the gels for your take-home trays, that price may increase. We recommend that you speak with your dentist about payment options, as we have a few payment plans that can help you get a whiter smile!
