Summer is almost over, and that means school is right around the corner! That also means you’ll want to make an appointment at Boger Dental for a back to school checkup for your child. Here is why your child should visit the dentist before school and the four ways you can have a successful appointment with the dentist.
Why Do Kids Need Back to School Dental Checks?
Some schools require dental checkups much like you would need from a pediatrics office before getting back into the swing of educational courses. When you keep up with regular dental checkups for your child, you can help combat diseases and issues that are common in kids, like cavities. According to the American Dental Association, cavities happen when there is a destruction of tooth enamel (the outer layer of the tooth). When that enamel breaks down and produces a small hole, it forms what is called a cavity.
Eat A Small Meal Before Your Appointment
A hungry child isn’t going to have an ideal experience at the dentist. We suggest feeding your child something light before their appointment at home. Then encourage some healthy habits by having them brush their teeth before heading to the dentist. When your child has something in their stomach, they’re less likely to gag, but a good thing to note is that as kids age, their gag reflex tends to diminish once they gain more control of swallowing.
Encourage Healthy Habits
Summertime can mean habits are thrown out the window as regular routines are interfered with fun activities and added snack time. The end of summer brings an excellent time for you to encourage healthy habits back into your child’s life, especially if they have daily routines during the school year.
Having a cavity-free checkup is essential, not only for adults but kids as well. We suggest encouraging your child to brush their teeth twice a day (for 2 minutes), and floss once a day to promote a healthy oral routine.
Back To School Checklist
Regular dental visits include a dental examination and cleaning. We compiled a short checklist for you when your child gets ready to head back to school:
- Ensure your child has their regular dental exam to diagnose and treat any issues.
- Get a fresh start to the school year with a new toothbrush. Toothbrushes should be changed every three months and after an illness.
- Make sure your child is brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily.
- Cut back on acidic and sugary foods, soft drinks during lunch or snack time, and encourage healthy eating.
- Talk with your dentist about orthodontics
- Check to see if your child’s sports mouthguard adequately fits.
